Eastern Wyoming College freshman Jayce Johnson, of Alliance, Neb.,finished sixth in the nation in the tie-down roping at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) held last week in Casper, Wyoming.
"Jayce entered Saturday's short round number two in the average, but some tough luck with a bad roll of the rope took him out of the race," Jake Clark, EWC Rodeo Coach said. "I am extemely proud of Jayce's rookie year. We plan on seeing him back at the CNFR next year with great experience under his belt."
Eastern Wyoming College was also represented at the CNFR by bullriders Willie Grimm and Kyle Lozier, who were the Central Rocky Mt. Region champion and reserve champion bull riders, respectively.
Grimm, of Harrison, Neb. placed sixth in the first round of the bullriding with an 80 point ride. Grimm's ride placed him sixteenth in the nation. Lozier, of Williams Lake, Canada, placed sixth in the second round with a 71.5 ride.
"Our bull riders made some great rides," Clark said. "At this rodeo, the bulls won more than the cowboys."
Derek Kenner earned a berth to the CNFR when he won the reserve champion regional title in the saddle bronc riding. Kenner, of Wood Lake, neb. finished eighteenth in the nation.
"Derek rode really well last week," Clark said. "His first two horses didn't score well which hurt him in the average."
Kenner will return to EWC this fall. "I look forward to watching him ride this next season, Clark continued.
"The CNFR is full of the nation's most talented student athletes," Clark concluded. "This elite group is a thrill to watch and coach."
